We are done with the first civilizations!!!! There were many advances in technology, agricultural, and communications. The most outstanding however was the Indus Valley. They were far more advanced than any other civilization at the time and for many many more years. There is a book called Are We Rome? and not knowing anything about what is in the book, I think we have may characteristics of Rome. "empires are simply states" (106) was stated and yeah, they are. So we are like Rome! The Persian empire was the most impressive and they were during the 500 B.C.E time period. Satraps were were Persian governors placed in each of the 23 provinces. They made a standardized coin system and dug a huge canal connecting the Nile to the Read Sea. The Greeks had a very distinctive lifestyle. When the Greeks and Persians fought, it would be very unfair. It was small, divided greek cities, versus the large Persian empire. Luckily the Greeks banded together and won. Rome grew from a city-state to an empire. Empires rise, and empires fall, in 220 CE the Han Dynasty fell. The Roman empire gave the template for thinking about political life.
