Intro and Chapter 1
Prologue:
If the universe was on a 1 year calendar, more than half of the landmarks happened within the month of December, which is incredibly interesting because it helps put the age of the universe in a picture. Also, just thinking that the world has been around for 13.7 billion years is crazy to think about. For 3 billion years, life remained as single cell organisms. I thought it was interesting that the author could summarize the history of the human species, all in one long paragraph. Change, comparison, and connection are the three C's that mold world history.
Chapter 1:
Humans began as hunters and gatherers, we have survived this was for thousands of years. The Hadza tribe survived this way and still was living in 2014 this way. I would imagine that they are still living because if they have survived for so many years this way, I believe that they have mastered the practice. The first 150,000 years of human existence was African. Later on, they moved out a little to eastern and western Africa. Human migration started in Eurasia and ended with the discovery of lands in the pacific ocean. The first societies in human history were very small, usually only consisting of family. Women provided the bulk of the families sustenance, which I believed was the opposite. I thought the men got the meat and that filled the small tribes, but in fact it was the woman who were most detrimental in the survival process. Religion was also found to be prevalent in some societies, and these groups even deemed people to be "good with the spirit". 25,000 years ago, was when the first specialized materials, such as spear points and sharp rocks were found. Agriculture had a huge breakthrough in the Paleolithic era, in fact the agriculture advances is the most important and defining moment in the era. This movement of agriculture lead the foundation for so many things good and bad such as cities and states as well as disease and war. The domestication of animals also lead the charge to easier and more stable lives. This also brought disease but I would argue the upside weighed more than the downside. Food could be transported from continent to continent by birds. The seeds would be eaten, then pooped out on the other side. Food was also modified by selective adaptation. Corn was changed so much by this process, which eventually made it good to eat for humans. All in all, the Paleolithic age was the foundation for all society. This was the beginning of all humans. We much give homage to our great great great really old ancestors because without them making technological and agricultural advances, we may not be here today.
After this was posted, I realized in class that the homework was only up until The Ways We Were. Unfortunately I did the whole chapter, but I shall re read the section and make a more detailed blog for it!
